Shareholders gave the green light Friday to a merger between two Samsung affiliates that will help ailing chairman Lee Kun-hee pass control of the conglomerate to his son.

The deal between Cheil Industries and Samsung C&T -- two of Samsung's roughly 70 businesses -- was opposed by activist hedge fund Elliot Associates, and came dangerously close to defeat.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has alerted the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, of fresh plots by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to compromise a section of the Judiciary and muzzle democracy in their desperation to oust him from office, saying; 

“The essence of all of these is to silence him as the voice of opposition in the country because he has bluntly rejected all overtures to him to defect into the ruling APC or stop talking.”

Three Female Suicide Bombers Shot Dead in Adamawa

Three female suicide bombers were shot dead yesterday in Bakin Dutse, Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State, officials have said.

The officials said the three girls were on a mission to carry out suicide bombings at a crowded market in Gulak, before they were shot by soldiers and local vigilantes.

The three women were intercepted at Bakin Dutse village, five kilometers from Gulak, the administrative headquarters of Madagali Local Government Area, where villagers converge in their hundreds every Wednesday for the market day.

CAF President, Issa Hayatou under prosecution in Egypt

Confederation of African Football president Issa Hayatou has been referred to Egyptian prosecutors for investigation over allegedly abusing his position.

At issue is a deal awarding the broadcast rights to several African football tournaments to a media company, Lagardere Sports.

According to the Egyptian Competition Authority, Hayatou is suspected of not opening up the tender to free and fair competition as required by Egyptian law.

Oil prices rise on expected drop in U.S. crude inventories - Oil prices ticked higher on Wednesday on expectations that U.S. crude inventories have dropped and on signs that the world's top oil exporters will stick to agreed output cuts that took effect this week. Global benchmark Brent crude futures LCOc1 rose 28 cents to $55.75 a barrel, a 0.5 percent gain by 10:51 a.m. Eastern. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures CLc1 gained 25 cents, or 0.5 percent, at $52.58 a barrel. Both benchmarks recovered some losses from the previous day – when the U.S.-dollar .DXY hit a 14-year peak and knocked oil from 18-month highs – as the greenback dipped on Wednesday, making dollar-denominated fuel purchases in other currencies cheaper. Weekly U.S. industry and government reports are expected to show a 1.7 million-barrel crude draw for last week, analysts polled by Reuters said ahead of the data due late Wednesday and on Thursday.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has announced the list of successful bidders for the 2017/2018 crude oil term contracts.

The list consists of 39 winners comprising 18 Nigerian companies, 11 international traders, five foreign refineries, three National Oil Companies (NOCs), and two NNPC trading arms. The Group General Manager, Crude Oil Marketing Division (COMD) of the Corporation, Mr. Mele Kyari, who announced the results, according to a statement posted on the corporation’s website, said the contract would run for one year effective January 1, 2017 for twelve consecutive circles of crude oil allocation.

The Federal Executive Council approves N4.6 billion to buy fire fighting equipment

The Federal Executive Council has approved a N4.6 billion contract for buying fire fighting equipment. According to the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazzau, fire fighting equipment were last purchased by the Federal Governement of Nigeria in 1996.

"The Federal Executive Council has approved the procurement of some fire fighting equipment. The last time such equipment were procured was sometime in 1996 and so equipment in the inventory were those procured between 1985 and 1996 and since then there was no procurement"

10 year old girl blows self up in Maiduguri

One person was seriously injured when a suicide bomber aged around 10 blew herself up in a New Year's Eve attack in the northeastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri, witnesses and aid workers told AFP Sunday.

The girl approached a crowd buying noodles from a food vendor in the Customs area of the city around 9:30 pm on Saturday and detonated her explosives, they said.

Although no one has claimed responsibility the attack bore the hallmark of Boko Haram Islamists who are notorious for using suicide bombers, mostly women and young girls, in attacking civilian targets.

Buhari signs ammeded endangered species bill into law

According to The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Sen. Ita Enang, President Buhari today signed the Endangered Species Control Bill into law. “This is one of the 10 bills that were forwarded by the National Assembly to Mr. President and he has just assented to this, almost completing every action on all the bills that were forwarded to him by the National Assembly.

“The intent of this amendment is to bring the penalty provisions in line with economic realities and to act as a deterrent or deter people from trafficking and trading in endangered species because endangered are preserves of the country.

“It will discourage traffic and it will improve agriculture and the preservation of endangered species in Nigeria''.

Police in Osun have arrested a prophet, his prophetess wife and several others for the kidnap of a five-year-old boy.

Sunday Akinboye, prophet in charge of Cherubim & Seraphim Church, Ileri-Oluwa Parish at Arubidi in ile-ife, and his wife Idowu Adewole, connived with four others, including a pregnant woman to abduct five-year-old Ojo Adegboyega in Ipetu-Jesa, police said.
